What’s the Best Time to Buy Gas? The Answer Will Save You Money
Have you ever put gas in your car in the morning, then seen that same gas station drop prices later that day? It makes you mad, right? Many Canadians ask: is there a best time to buy gas?
Dan McTeague, known as Canada’s “Gas Guru,” says yes! And his answer might surprise you.
The 6 PM Rule That is The Best Time to Buy Gas
On our newest Your Grey Matters podcast, Neil Silvert talked with Dan McTeague. Dan used to be in the government and now runs Canadians for Affordable Energy. He shared a money-saving tip about buying gas.
“Never buy your gas before 6 p.m. in the evening,” Dan said. “Don’t buy it in the morning. Don’t buy it at noon.”
Why wait until evening? Gas stations want to sell a lot of gas each day. By evening, they often cut prices by 10 to 15 cents per liter just to sell more gas.
What Are “Gas Bar Tricks”?
Dan calls these price drops “gas bar shenanigans” (she-nan-i-gans). It’s actually simple to understand. By the end of the day, gas stations make enough money from selling snacks, coffee, and other items. So they can drop gas prices to get more people to stop in.
This is why you see different prices in the morning versus the evening. It’s also why prices can be different between nearby towns.
Summer Gas vs. Winter Gas
Dan also talked about why gas prices change with the seasons. The price jump we see twice a year happens for a real reason – gas is made differently in summer and winter.
Summer gas (used from April 15 to September 15) has special stuff in it to stop it from turning into vapor when it’s hot. Winter gas has something called butane that helps cars start when it’s cold. This makes about a six cent change in price per liter.
Why Cheap Energy Matters to All Canadians
Saving money on gas is great, but Dan talked about bigger issues too. When energy costs more, everything costs more – from food to clothes to housing.
These high costs hurt everyone across Canada, no matter where you live or what job you have.
